The rapid development of economy in China has brought about an unprecedented development of higher vocational education. The new situations are setting a higher demand on higher vocational schools and expecting them to improve the English skills of their students. Writing, as an important means of communication, involves and manifests the comprehensive abilities of students. Writing teaching plays an important part in the school's English courses. And the improvement of students'writing ability can promote their abilities in listening, speaking, reading, translating and thinking. Therefore, it is necessary for us to explore a method that applies to students in higher vocational schools.Humanistic teaching approach stresses learners'affective factors. It organizes teaching in accordance with learners'needs, interests and motivation. It exploits learners' potentialities to the full and ensures their self actualization. This research attempts to apply humanistic approach to writing teaching in higher vocational schools, and intends to find out an efficient method of promoting students'writing ability.In this research, the researcher adopted an experimental method, questionnaires, interviews and classroom observations. This research was conducted in two classes from Wuxi Central Vocational Education School and lasted one semester. In the experimental class, humanistic teaching approach was carried out in so as to test the practicability and effects of the approach in writing teaching of higher vocational schools.After one semester's experiment, the results show that the humanistic approach is applicable in writing teaching in higher vocational schools. This approach not only promotes students'writing ability, but also improves their attitudes and emotions towards English writing.
