Aesthetic Reproduction Of Qingzhao's Poetry In English Translation-from The Perspective Of Reception Aesthetics

Li Qingzhao, a famous female Ci poet in Song dynasty, is well known for her fresh and chaste poems in the literary world. Her great works are not only an outstanding flower among Chinese classical culture, but also a splendid and glorious pearl in the world culture treasure-house. Li Qingzhao's works and achievements are worth being sung by later generation forever. Since the eighties of the last century, the scholars and experts from home and abroad have begun to study Li Qingzhao'poetry in English from many aspects. What they discuss mainly concentrates on the style of translating Li's poetry and how to transfer the original content faithfully. However, this thesis is going to discuss and analyze the aesthetic reproduction of different translated works from the perspective of reception aesthetics.From the perspective of reception aesthetics, this paper analyzed different translators different representations of the beauty of Li Qingzhao's poetry in English under expectation horizon and blank theory. Through comparison and analysis of different translators'translation, a conclusion can be made as following: Translators have their own expectation horizon and pre-understandings as well as different translation opinions, which lead to the different understanding of the original works, then represent the original content and beauty in different ways. It is almost impossible to completely keep accordance with the original works in form, sound, rhyme and content because there is huge difference between Chinese and English language. However, a translation might be an excellent and successful one if it manages to be similar to the original form and rhyme under the pre-conditions that the translation can represent the original content and beauty, keep the proper blanks for the target readers. This paper is divided into five chapters in total.The first chapter is an introduction to Li Qingzhao's poetry translated in English at home and abroad, the goals of this writing and the structure of the paper. The second chapter looked back at the development of reception aesthetics, summarizing its main contents and the relationship between translation and reception aesthetics. In this chapter, the two important contents of reception aesthetics---expectation horizon and blank theory are introduced as well. The third chapter analyzed the relationship between Li's English-translated poetry and the theory of reception aesthetics. The fourth chapter discussed in detail the different English versions of Li's poems from the perspective of reception aesthetics, and whether the translated text represents the original text's beauty. In the conclusion, that is chapter five, a summary of this paper as well as a glimpse of the further study of Li's translated poems are made.
