Translation Of Tourism Texts From The Perspective Of Reception Aesthetics

With the upcoming of 21st century,the economic boom in China brings about growing demands for outbound travel.Yet,Chinese version of foreign tourism materials is very limited.This thesis has made efforts to translate the first chapter of Secret Journeys of a Lifetime to Chinese from the perspective of Reception Aesthetics with the purpose of enriching studies on English-Chinese tourism translation and practical translation.Secret Journeys of a Lifetime,a special magazine published by American National Geographic,not only satisfies Chinese people's expectation with worldwide scenic spots,but also distinguishes itself with excellent authentic English.The function of tourism text is to provide rich travel information for readers,and appeals to them.That is why the status and roles of readers are more than significant in tourism translation.Reception Aesthetics is a literary criticism theory represented by Jauss.Horizon of Expectation is a core concept of this theory.Its unprecedented emphasis on reader's status and roles offers a brand-new perspective for tourism translation.This thesis analyzes the source text at lexical and syntactic levels,and chooses translation strategies in light of the target reader's cognitive and aesthetic Horizon of Expectation so as to satisfy and improve their Horizon of Expectation.The target reader's cognitive Horizon of Expectation are satisfied mainly through the translation of geographical nouns,culture-loaded nouns and numbers at lexical level;while the target reader's aesthetic Horizon of Expectation are satisfied through the translation of subheads,leading-in sentences and paragraphs at both lexical and syntactic levels.Generally speaking,the combination of annotation with literal translation,free translation,transliteration and etc.are wildly used to satisfy the target reader's cognitive Horizon of Expectation.The translation strategies for satisfying the target reader's aesthetic Horizon of Expectation is otherwise more flexible,but it's obvious that addition,free translation,division,reshuffle,and restructuring are applied most frequently.Therefore,it can be concluded that Horizon of Expectation under professor Jauss' Reception Aesthetics is significant in the guidance of translation strategies.
