As the single novel of Yang Jiang, since its appearance,Xizao1 attracts extensive attention among readers and literary critics,in the meanwhile,Baptism, its English translation is highly appreciated by English readers at home and abroad.Through the marshalling of vast array of literature on reception theory and its application to translation, this thesis, based on the deep analysis of the target text,in combination with the author's valuable and informative correspondence with Judith M.Amory, one of the co-translators,carries out the following study and research:Firstly, the feature of the translation and translation strategies adopted in Baptism is illustrated from lexical level, syntactic level and stylistic level respectively;Secondly,on the macroscopic level, combined with core terms from aesthetic of reception theory—reader's horizon, translator's horizon, the fusion of the reader's and translator's horizon and the macroscopic reception of target readers are expounded. From these points, the conclusion can be drawn that the English translation of the novel adopts the co-translation pattern,in which the native speaker co-operates with the Chinese American scholar in the completion of the project;as for translation strategy, the translators adopt the strategy of literal translation supplemented with liberal translation, and the strategy of domestication supplemented with foreignization, which gives target readers reception into sufficient consideration, preserves the social, historical and cultural elements in the source text and takes the fusion of horizon of the target reader and the implied reader of the source text into account;therefore, achieving the realization of the reproduction of the style of the original work and a better reception of the target readers. This thesis aims to analyze the feature and strategy adopted in Baptism, the English translation of Yang Jiang's novel Xizao, from the perspective of aesthetics of reception theory,so as to illustrate the internal relation among the aim of translation, strategies adopted in translation and the reception of target readers,so as to provide some suggestions to the translation of Chinese novels into English.
