Artistic Study On Illustration Of Literature In The Republic Of China

The literature books'illustrations in republic of China deserve an outstanding historical position in the entire Chinese illustrations history of literature books, not only in terms of its heritage of traditional illustration art design, but also in terms of its establishment of transferring the traditional illustration art into modern style, enlightening the modernized procedure of the literature books'illustrations.The illustrations in this period served as a link between the past and the future, which is determined by the particular historical era. Looking back to the Chinese history, the republic of China was a period of a particularity and turbulence. It departed from the feudal society, announcing the wiping out of feudal policy that had been lasting for thousands of years; an expected democratic society seems to be realized. However, the democratic revolution was not completed: struggles among warlords rising one after another, foreign countries'glare with hostility and initiation of the undisguised invasion. All those caused the unbalanced developments for the republic of China and induced political turbulence. Whereas, largely improved environments had been achieved comparing with Qing dynasty in terms of the renovated economy and culture, appearance of new science and technology, and surge of various old and new thoughts. Those directly or indirectly influenced the creation of literature books illustration. Moreover, with the innovation of printing technologies, enlightenment of colorful printings, introduction of the western decoration style, symbolized style, cartoon style, and the rising and propagation of May Fourth movement and anti-Japanese war movement, etc., the illustrations'design concepts and idea were directly affected stage by stage, gradually transferring from the traditional way to be modern; their styles were gradually transferring from singleness to be multiple; their themes were gradually transferring from conservation to be open. The rudiment of the Chinese modern illustrations'concepts and ideas was thereby initially appearing based on the era's sedimentation.The thesis focuses on this particular era's illustrations of the literature books, trying to reveal a relatively completed illustration features of the literature books in the republic of China from the point of art. Linking the era's background and historical conditions, the main procedure and characteristics of the literature books'illustrations are combed, from which the illustration's important turning role in Chinese illustration history of literature books is highlighted; reviews the predecessors'creation process in illustration design and feels their enterprising attitude as well as innovating spirit; tastes the aesthetics characteristics and good combinations of Chinese and Western illustration styles in various literature books, exploring the importance of the illustrations in terms of upgrading the spiritual influences and aesthetic feelings.
