The late 80s of last century, under the multicultural social culture which was make up by the enlightenment, speculation, controversy and rebellion, new documentary movement rose in a clear gesture of rebellion in the social transformation period. To Wu Wenguang's "Bumming in Beijing", Liu Xiaoli's "Odyssey of the Great Wall" as a symbol, new documentary movement attacks both inside and outside the system, spreading off as a hurricane at the time an oppressive media environment, and bear fruitful results. The creators of new documentary movement act their artistic pursuit by using the unique position, the documentary techniques performance, the simple aesthetic feelings and sincere practice of humanism.This thesis review the development process of new documentary movement from the perspective of contemporary culture; study documentary aesthetics by film aesthetics, culture and narrative theory, and clarify the aesthetic properties of form and creation features affected by the contemporary culture pattern and the elite cultural and the popular culture of documentary. Meanwhile, it resolves the dilemma of the new documentary under the TV column phase in the late 90's and the new development in DV digital video era.
