Shi Shuo Xin Yu is a note novel (written) by Liu Yiqing of the Southern Song dynasty. This book is a represent of the oral language and a reflection of the language features of Wei Jin Southern and Northern dynasty. It is of such great value that has been considered as an important document to study the history of Chinese. Chinese adverb is an important part for Chinese studying. This paper explores the characteristics, classification and usage of the ranging adverb) to illustrate the usage of adverbs and the contributions that Shi Shuo Xin Yu has made. It consists of six parts. The first part is the preface, in which the objective, the background information, literature review and the methods will be introduced. Also, the definition and categories of the ranging adverbs, the object of this research, will be discussed in this part. Five categories will be discussed, indicating containing, the whole and the majority; restriction, coordination and statistics respectively. The third part is about the statistic analysis for the distribution of 50 words and their exemplification from Shi Shuo Xin Yu. The semantic analysis of the ranging adverbs will be analyzed in the third part. In Part Four, the developing characteristics and significance will be explored in order to illustrate the status of the ranging adverbs in Chinese grammar developing history. Part Five is about concluding remarks.
