Lin Yutang is a great writer at home and aboard. He is also a rare bilingual writer and many of his works have its bilingual versions of English and Chinese. Many scholars have made deep research on Lin Yutang's translation activity but self-translation as an important part of his translation is seldom noticed.This thesis addresses the researches on Lin Yutang and his self-translations, analyzes Lin's motivations of self-translation and translation strategies to find the revelation of self-translation to literary translation. Lin Yutang's unique life and educational experiences helped build up his unique cultural identity, which made him possess all the qualities as a self-translator. His strong desire to communicate with Chinese readers directly and dissatisfaction with others'translation made him the way to self-translation. In the process of self-translation, flexible translation strategies were applied. The success of Lin's self-translation reveals us that faithfulness in some details is not important, the whole faithfulness is what we should pursue.Self-translation is an important part in Lin Yutang's literary creation and translation. It is worth researching.
