Lin Yutang grew up in the environment of Christian, and he also lived abroad for more than 30 years, which laid a solid foundation for his western cultural background.Meanwhile,he also deeply loved Chinese culture.Due to this special experience,he was very good at translating others' works as well as his own works between Chinese and English culture.Qian Suoqiao collected Lin's 50 short essays published on The China Critic of 1930 s into the book The Little Critic: The Bilingual Essays of Lin Yutang, which made a great contribution to the self-translation studies.Under the guidance of Susan Bassnett's cultural translation theory, according to the strategies of domestication and foreignization put forward by Lawrence Venuti, taking The Little Critic: The Bilingual Essays of Lin Yutang as the research materials, the author summarizes six translation methods which are zero translation, transliteration, literal translation, free translation, imitation and variation translation. And through the analysis, the author finds that the diversity of translation strategies and methods are fully presented in Lin's self-translated works, which provides more research orientations for translation studies.Next, different translation strategies and methods have different effects on different texts. Finally,to a certain extent, the ideology contained in Lin Yutang's self-translation is in accordance with what Bassnett advocates in cultural translation theory.By studying on the translation strategies and methods of Lin's self-translated works, the author hopes to broaden translators' scope of mind and also hopes the translators can apply different translation strategies and methods for different target readers during the process of translation, rather than being restricted by the originals' structures and contents. What's more, those translation strategies and methods in Lin's self-translated works also have positive impact on Chinese culture "going out".Besides,on the premise of mastering solid and enough expertise, writers should be encouraged to do self-translation because it is they who know their works best, which can accurately convey what they really want to express to the readers.
