Although Jia Pingwa and Hardy are of different backgrounds, some of their novels all reflect to some extent the natural environments in the rural areas and the situations and life in the rural areas under the influence of some modern cultural factors. And this kind of works of the two authors is usually called rural novels. This thesis will make a comparative study of the two authors'rural novels in order to find some similarities in the two authors'rural novels.There are four parts in this thesis.The first part is the introduction part. This part of the thesis gives a brief introduction of the two authors'respective backgrounds and presents what will be studied in the later parts of the thesis.The second part is the chapter one of the thesis. This part of the thesis presents some similarities in the descriptions of natural scenery in Jia Pingwa's and Hardy's rural novels. The descriptions of natural scenery in the two authors'rural novels have two same functions which are summed up in this thesis, and they are providing natural environments for the narration of everyday life of the characters and helping the authors express their thinking and feelings. And by the descriptions of natural scenery which is peaceful, quiet and plain in some of their rural novels, both of the two authors, in some of their rural novels, express their praise of and respect for the kind of natural environment which is peaceful, quiet and plain and show their deep thinking of the spiritual home of people in the new period.The third part is the chapter two of the thesis. This part of the thesis presents some similarities in the thinking of cultural factors in Jia Pingwa's and Hardy's rural novels. There is deep thinking of some cultural factors in Jia Pingwa's and Hardy's rural novels. This thesis will make a study of the two authors'thinking of some cultural factors from the following points: Jia Pingwa's and Hardy's thinking of the image of good people in the new period in their rural novels, Jia Pingwa's and Hardy's thinking of the value judgments of the people in the new period in their rural novels, Jia Pingwa's and Hardy's praise of good moral qualities in their rural novels, Jia Pingwa's and Hardy's criticisms of the immoral thinking and doings of some people in the new period in their rural novels and Jia Pingwa's thinking of doing one's filial duty in his rural novels and Hardy's thinking of showing love to other things in the universe, such as other people, other animals, plants, minerals, etc. And this thesis will show that, by the thinking of some cultural factors in their rural novels, both Jia Pingwa and Hardy express, in their rural novels, their deep thinking of the spiritual home of people in the new period.The forth part of the thesis is the conclusion part. By the comparative study of Jia Pingwa's and Hardy's rural novels, this thesis presents some similarities in their rural novels. This thesis shows that both Jia Pingwa and Hardy have, in their rural novels, deep thinking of the spiritual home of people in the new period.
