Personality Construction

Taoism and Christianity, playing important roles in the cultural histories, exert great influences over the construction of Taoist personalities and Christian personalities respectively. The great Taoist works Dao De Jing also known as The Classic of the Virtue of the Tao written by Laozi and Zhuangzi written by Zhuangzi, and the Holy Bible, the works about Christianity, reflect their ideas on the constructions of personalities.Based on the above classic works, this thesis intends to make a comparison of Taoist culture and Christian culture by analyzing the speeches and deeds of Laozi, Zhuangzi and Jesus Christ, who are the representatives of Taoism and Christianity respectively.This thesis consists of six parts. Besides introduction and conclusion, there are four chapters with their own unique focuses and analyses. Introduction introduces the brief background knowledge of Dao De Jing, Zhuangzi and the Holy Bible. Apart from the layout and study methods of the thesis, the results and significance are listed explicitly.Chapter one gives the detailed literature review concerning foreign and domestic studies on personality. Chapter two introduces the connotation of personality in general, and comes up with the ideal personality models of Taoism and Christianity. Chapter three consists of three parts, in which the elements of personality construction are explored. In order to achieve a better and more profound comprehension of related arguments, directly this thesis cites relevant scriptures from both Taoism classics and the Holy Bible to exemplify specific statements. Based on the previous three chapters, chapter four analyses the principles of personality cultivation of ideal personalities of Taoism and Christianity respectively. And finally this paper points out the theoretical and practical significance of this research.Besides, by studying the ideal personalities of Taoism and Christianity, this thesis intends to draw attention to the comparative studies on Taoist culture and Christian culture.
