Beethoven, a great artist and master who has inherited Classicism and initiated Romanticism, is known as a vocal music composer, as well as an instrumental composer. His artistic songs are important for the foundation of lied in Romantic Period."Three Songs"(OP. 83), composed by him for Goethe's three poems, are perfect examples of Beethoven's lied. Lyrics of"Three Songs"are nicely coherent to show the unique feelings and rhythm in Goethe's poems. More over, the melody and piano accompaniment in"Three Songs"are also original and outstanding, and the musical style inherited traditions of Classicism while explores the"trend toward Romanticism". In general,"Three Songs"uses the same poet's same-subject poems as their lyrics, and the three songs are connected to one another in melody, tonality and musical composition. As a result,"Three Songs"could be regarded as the bedding for the following"vocal divertimento".
