This thesis takes feminism as the theoretical framework and the angle to make comparative analysis of the two heroines, Lily Bart and Sethe in Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth and Toni Morrison's Beloved. Lily Bart and Sethe both found themselves in the predicaments of Marriage and Motherhood created by the patriarchal society even if they lived in the different time. Through detailed analysis of the process from their being trapped in the dilemma, fighting against the patriarchal society to their awakening and self-recognition, it exposes the evil nature of the patriarchal society, meanwhile praises and encourages women to walk out of their life dilemma and achieve the goal of making self-awakening, self-recognition, and self-liberation.
