Su Shi, a scholar of a generation, is spoken highly with his laughter in all ages, speciallyhis optimistic attitude toward life and his magnanimous heart. He was a brilliant man of wildlearning. He had the great Confucian aspirations, hoping to serve his own government and todisplay his talent. But his personality made his life full of tribulation in official field andexperienced demotion twice. confronting the adversity and against the injustice of the fate,SuShi took these into his poetry, with "a smile" to offset the gloom of the society, thereforeso much of his poems were bantering poems. This paper tries to analyze the means of artisticexpression and influence elements in Su Shi's bantering poems. It has four parts. The firstpart is to define the "banter"exactly with Chinese dictionary,Wen Xin Diao Long andsome ancient books. And through comparing the bantering poems with other humorousstories and jokes. It points out the similarities and differences between them and theimportance of"banter". Then through the statistics of Su Shi's poetry anthology, it lists thepoems which the title has the word "fun" to illustrate that Sushi was skilled in banter. SuShi's bantering poems are classified into three classes in the second part of this paper. Theseare the allegorical poems of politics, the bantering poems of making fun of his relatives orfriends and the bantering poems of self-mockery. The paper will use Su Shi's classic poems toanalyze his deep opinion and thought of his lives, and his laughing at his bitter experienceThe third part of this paper demonstrates the four rhetorical means of quotation, metaphorirony and slangs in Su Shi's bantering poems. The last part of this paper discusses the originand meaning of Su Shi's bantering poems. It will look for and find the origin of"banter"fromSu Shi's personal characters, his experience, his knowledge and predecessor's effect ofbantering poem masters. It will also deeply discuss his bantering poems'meanings for latergeneration's poem writing and style. Although his life was full of difficult, he could stillaugh at it, which is the special place of Su Shi. His humor is the criticizing of his age withlaugh, and the courage of himself and others. He took all of the promotions and demotionshardships and sufferings into his bantering poems as rough material, expressing his optimisticcharacter and the depression feeling in his mind. This expression is not radical and negativebut positive and smiling. Su Shi was showing us his smiling philosophy of his deepdepression by his bantering poems.
