The 21st century is typically cross-cultural communication. According to the basics of cross-cultural communication research, the communication of people from different cultural backgrounds is a quite complex process. During this process, their divergence will lead to different understanding. In the novel The Joy Luck Club written by Amy Tan, the four Chinese-born mothers and their American-born daughters have experienced cultural conflicts, cultural understanding as well as blending. However, cultural understanding can not occur overnight. It is a long process with much pain and misunderstanding. Due to these mothers'great efforts, their daughters gradually understand them and the Chinese culture as well. In this way, cultural understanding and blending are achieved. With a research on The Joy Luck Club from the cross-cultural perspective, just as its ending implied——the cultural understanding and blending of the west and the east is the main trend of modern age, and it is on its way to come. This thesis aims to give a cross-cultural study of The Joy Luck Club which is one of the most famous works by Amy Tan and explore the way for communication between people of absolutely different cultural backgrounds. Then it can be concluded that in the course of cross-cultural communication, we should be aware of that the only way to eliminate the cross-cultural communication barriers is understanding and negotiation. We have to not only enhance cultural self-awareness, but also respect other cultures.
