Lanzhou is the capital city of Gansu province. As the economy and education of this region is still backward, many English learners would read and write English rather than speaking English: Though they have great interest in English learning and realize the importance of speaking English, most learners lack confidence in both speaking and listening. For some pronunciation problems of college students are greatly influenced by Lanzhou dialect. Based on the Theory of Phonetics, the Theory of Habit and Language Theory of Negative Transfer, the writer makes a research into college students living in Lanzhou whose major are not English, and make an analysis about the negative effects of Lanzhou students'mother tongue transfer in their English phonetic learning.The writer compares English sound system with Lanzhou dialect sound system by means of the research method of experimental phonetics. Making a comparison between the two language sound systems by a set of phonetic software-prrat and points out the difficulties for Lanzhou College students in learning English pronunciation. Chapter one introduces roughly the background, significance and current situation of the study; chapter two recommends relative theories; chapter three presents the characteristics of Lanzhou dialect sound system and English sound system; chapter four analysis the influence of Lanzhou dialect on college students'English pronunciation by experiment; chapter five summarizes the difference and similarity between the two language sound systems and chapter six gives the conclusion and suggestions.With the study and analysis, the author concludes that Lanzhou dialect interferes English learning of college students, especially in their learning of English pronunciation. It has become an obstacle to communications in English and negatively influences the students'mentality. The author discusses the causes of negative transfer, meanwhile, gives some suggestions for teaching English pronunciation.
