On Logical Approach To Translation Objectivity

The research of translation theory has achieved a lot and along with the rapid development of technology of science and information, the research on objectivity of translation highlights its unique position. However, the current theoretical research on translation objectivity is not satisfactory in the sense of systematic and scientific completion. More achievements are expected for gradual improvement.Based on both Intentionality theory in 1983 and the theory for logical foundation of speech acts in 1985 by John R. Searle, the author combines Xiong Renfang's idea proposed in 2008 that the entire translation process including the understanding of source language text (SLT), the encoding of TLT, proofreading of target language text (TLT) and so on are companied with the translator's logical thinking activities, and attempts to explore translation objectivity from a logical perspective. It focuses on the philosophical attribute of objectivity in translation and finds that thought, idea and emotion are materials in nature, and then it further explores the complete state of transmission of forms and contents between two languages. These forms and contents are of objective material composition in philosophical sense carried in language. Thus, objectivity is understood as a philosophical concept. It furthermore tracks the philosophical origin of translation objectivity and innovatively finds Marxist dialectical view on the material is the philosophical basis for translation objectivity. According to dialectical materialism, material goes primary, consciousness goes secondary, subjectivity and objectivity are in the unity of opposites, and subjectivity is initiative to reflect the objectivity; subjectivity can promote or hinder the development of objective affairs. It therefore makes a dialectical analysis and understanding of relationship between objectivity and subjectivity of translation and further concludes that subjectivity and objectivity are unified in objectivity in translation.Logic is a research tool and a cutting point in this thesis. It adopts Mr. He Xiangdong's broad logic, which is mainly concerned with the rules and form and thinking as well as logical methods; and then reveals the two functions of capturing and determining in language meanings with the three basic laws in logic, which are law of contradiction, law of identity and law of excluded middle. Together with reference to dialectical logical method, it reveals the rationality of translation objectivity. Moreover, based on a brief analysis of three cases by translation software of Google, Netat, Iciba, it tries to demonstrate the feasibility of translation objectivity in reality; and it believes that theoretical achievements on translation objectivity will provide a solid theoretical basis for the improvement of machine translation.There are some aspects of significance in this thesis. Firstly, it introduces logic into the research of translation objectivity. Also, it systematically analyzes and summarizes the philosophical sense of objectivity in translation. Furthermore, it reveals the function of translation objectivity research and thus escapes from the traditional queer cycle in translation theory study providing a new idea for translation objectivity research, which is expected to be helpful not only for further research in translation theory but also for instruction to translation practice.
