Zhang Dong Sun And The Controversy Over Dialectecial Materialism

As a philosopher and ideologist,Zhang Dong Sun occupied an important position in the history of Chinese modern philosophy.This essay is based upon “The controversy on materialist dialectics”,aims to comment on Zhang's systematic and unique views on dialectics,formal logic,moral concepts and historical materialism by analyzing his philosophical dialogue with other scholars.And try to reveal the value and significance of Zhang's ideology towards Chinese contemporary philosophy.Zhang Dong Sun's ideological achievements in “The controversy on materialist dialectics” and his turn after it were important ideological heritages in the history of modern philosophy.His achievements mainly reflected in four aspects: Firstly,He defended for the survival and the development of pure philosophy,especially demonstrated the validity of formal logic,which was significant for the development of the logic in China.Secondly,His query on Materialist dialectics and its problematic consciousness was quite unique.In dealing with the relationship between evolution and dialectics,his concern on whether they were related or not help us rethink dialectics in multiple perspectives,which also help enhance our problematic consciousness,the same thought-provoking for whether dialectics had something with the law of causality.Thirdly,from the cultural point of view,he illustrated the nature and evolution of morality,as morality is not unchangeable but keep evolving,which broadened the horizons of Chinese modern philosophy on moral problems as well as related thinking.Fourthly,His criticism on Marxism directly pushed forward the rethinking of Marxist,and indirectly accelerated the localization of Marxism in China.After the controversy,Zhang Dong Sun changed attitude towards Marx,obtained a new perspective on Max's dialectics and historical materialism.Taking his turn of historical materialism and logical views as an example,this essay tries to examine his philosophy turn.He denied the uniqueness of western traditional logic,declared multiple logical,and treated logic as the heritage of culture.Combined culture and logic,provided a new perspective for research.These achievements broadened the normal research range of logic,promote the progress of logic.The understanding of his historical materialism and Max's provide us better comprehension on historical materialism.
