Study On The Narrative Of Hou Hsiao-hsien's Movie

As a new movie's standard-bearer of Taiwan and a movie master of art with the international influence, Hou Hsiao-hsien recorded the hundred years'social changes of Taiwan in his films, using his own unique and distinct narrative style. In his more than 30 years of creation career, his own unique art style has been formed gradually and the Chinese character of auteur film has also been initiated. His perseverance and innovation has gained the worldwide honor and acclaim for the Chinese-language films.Proceeding with the perspective of Narratology and combining the application of the relative theory of the film narration, the film linguistics and so on. The narrative theme, the narrative construction, the narrative audio-visual language and the narrative strategies of these four aspects in Hou Hsiao-hsien's films were systematically hackled and analyzed, as well as analyzed concretely with his films in this thesis, which elaborated how he applied the unique and marvelous narrative technique to tell the story in his movie. Based on this, the unique narrative style of Hou Hsiao-hsien's films is summarized to provide a vivid example for him and his film studies from the viewpoint of Narratology.
