Manipulation theory is an outstanding one in the field of literary translation. A wider perspective for literature translation research was provided by such culture-oriented theory. It not only broke through the limits of conventional research but also opened a new chapter in the annals of translation research.The primary goal of this thesis is to discuss strategies which are noteworthy in the children's literature translating process. From the perspective of manipulation theory by Andre Lefevere and the current reality concerning children literature translation and its peculiarities, we will perceive three elements of manipulation theory are instructive in children's literature translation.In light of manipulation theory, we also further point out its limitations. It is one-sided to place too much emphasis on manipulation in the process of translating while ignore the translators as the subject of translating also having their subjectivity. Manipulations of ideology, patronage and poetics were blown up out of all proportion. Some traditional theories'viewpoints were discarded such as equivalence in the translating.The chief aim of the present work is to investigate instructive roles and limitations of manipulation theory. Methods will be adopted in the study are known as descriptive-explanatory research method, contrastive analysis and inductive method. This thesis will make a tentative study of manipulation theory's influence on children's literature when it is translated into another language by adopting four Chinese versions of The Wind in the Willows. The thesis does not aim to make a final judgment among these four versions, but to uncover the fact that three elements of manipulation theory will also have an effect on children's literature translation and will be instructive. Through a comparison study, the writer will show what strategies translators merit attention to achieve better result in the translating. In the translating process, considering the special read group—children, translators also have to keep the readers'consideration in mind from its inception for translators were manipulated by three elements of manipulation theory. But translators are not only be manipulated but also need to tap their subjectivity. As for culture problems during the translating process, this paper calls for the proposition that domestication is to be preferred but foreignization should also be adopted appropriately. Though get out of the limitation of traditional translation theory and turn to a broader field beyond "science" and "theory", every theory has mutual complementation. Therefore, as for the result, equivalence from aspects of meaning, style and others should also need to pursuit.The study of children's literature and its translation has always been put in a marginalized position. It deserves to be taken seriously by large numbers of translators rather than being brushed aside. By analyzing four versions of The Wind in the Willows under manipulation theory, we hope to share reference strategies with translators in the process of translating children's literature and arouse more academic interest from other researchers to this special literary genre.
