Since the reform and opening-up in 1980, China undoubtedly has undergone a great social change again. In this reform, rural change is the most profound, stirring and intense. Obviously, the gigantic social shift not only inspired Zhou Daxin's passion to create local novels, but also provided rich creative materials. Comparing the traditional way which focus on the study of the rural awareness, folk narrative features, regional characteristics and the analyses and research of women characters, this paper try to breakthrough the framework. Studying the local novels of the 1920s-1930s and its inner relation with Zhou Daxin's work, we should put the literature background and social change into consideration. Though it is lack of reciprocity to compare Zhou's works with works of writers in that period, we have to admit that there are amazing similarities in terms of their evolution and influence. What's more, they have inner relations in essence and formation that deserve discussing. Therefore, comparing Zhou's novels with works of that period in historical perspective is beneficial not only to the reproduction of historical context but also to the objective comment and study of Zhou's novels.Nowadays, urban literature and popular culture is growing in prosperity and entertainment and fashion become the mainstream. In this background, Zhou has steadily focusing on writing local novels. On the basis of inheriting local novels of 1920s-1930s characterized by rethinking traditional cultural criticize and narrating customs and tragedies, he keenly describes farmers' living conditions and thinks deeply on problems such as distinction between town and country and modernity in the contemporary background. We can safely say Zhou's works condense the spiritual essences of writers of several generations, and it is a mirror in the local literary creation.In this paper, the author starts from the comparison between Zhou's local novels which set in the1920s-1930s and those in the background in the reform and opening-up to discourses the role and effect that Chinese local novels especially the current local creation represented by Zhou do in the process of Chinese modernization and literary reform. This paper will also offer some advises for the literature creation in the present and future.On the basis of studying Zhou's works and through longitudinal comparison, the paper focuses on discussion of the historical succession, modernity, transcendence and limitation in Zhou's works. It includes the similarities in local works in the early 20th century and current local works since reform and opening-up in perspectives of background as well as deep emotions for one's hometown. It also contains the common problems they have, such as difficult course and complex emotions that farmers have when they go to cities during urbanization, urban residents' and countrymen's attitudes towards each other, living, political and spiritual barriers they are confronted with, and many other factors that concerns their opinions on urbanization, rural areas and land. The author does analysis on the basis of the above, hoping to have a clear understanding about local novels' developing routine in new times and have a further discussion on the developing direction of local literature and creation.The paper includes six parts, namely introduction, four chapters and a conclusion to introduce the present study on Zhou's word in the literature field, the creative points in the paper and the explaining of the paper's framework .In the first chapter, the author mainly discuss Chinese local novels in the period of social transition, including the persistent pursuit that writers of 1920s-1930s have for local literature in spite of the colorful world, the confusion and exploration they have when facing the provincial and the modern, and the eternal local cultural spirit presented in their works. The second chapter is about Zhou's inheriting and continuing of the 1920s-1930s local tradition. The first part is local grounding, namely the geographical presentation of local implication; the second part is emotional keynote, namely the genuine description of national suffering; the third part is heart rest, namely the modern appeal on contradiction between urban and rural areas. The third chapter is Shoe's exploration and transcendence for 1920s-1930s local tradition. The third chapter comprises three parts. The first is radicalness and conservativeness of cultural choosing. The second is the survival paradox of evasion and reform. The third is complex mind-set destruction and rebuilding. The fourth chapter is the specific charm in Zhou's local creation, including two parts. One is the shaping of local female figures, and the other is the beauty of Nanyang dialect appears in his works. The conclusion gives a further summarization of the paper's main points.
