E.H.Gombrich is a famous british art historian and art theorist.In the visual art research,he is an encyclopedic scholar.There are five parts to illustrate the thesis:The introduction mainly talks about the academic status of the research about gombrich and the methods of this paper.Throughout the research about gombrich at home and abroad,mostly confines to one part of his theory or the general comments on his art theory,has not found comprehensive and deeply works.Therefore,this paper on the basis of summarizing the predecessors'research ,using the comparisom method,try to sort out his view about creation and interpretation of the visual arts ,and further to explore his theory's significance and limitations .The first part mainly discusses the status of gombrich's life and his visual art's theoretical origin. Gombrich grew up in a family which with artistic atmosphere,after he grew up,he went into the center of the university of Vienna to study art history.He received the professional education of art history. He has a lot of works.《The story of the art》,《The art and Illusion》,《Order Feeling》,《Symbolic Image》is his major works of art theory.In his visual research,Warburg institution,linguistics,psychology,popper's scientism has exerted profound influence to him.The second part is the core of the paper which mainly explained gombrich's concept of visual art.First,defines his visual art.This paper mainly focuses on the painting.Second , from the creation and interpretation perspective to discusse his view of the visual art.In creation,Gombrich proposes"schema-corrected"theory,reveales the secrets of artist's creation.In reading, he emphasizes the viewer's subjective initative,analyzes the language and the text of the visual art , he also put Popper's situational logic to the art research and discusses the context of visual art.The third part mainly discusses the significance and limitations of the gombrich's view of visual art.Gombrich's visual art research openes up the linguistic perspective of visual art,expandes visual art's dimensions of the psychology.But his theory is not completely suitable for some art. We should critically examine his theory. Conclusion part mainly summarizes gombrich's theories of visual art.Although there are some deficiencies on his theory, we should not diminish his achievements.His visual arts research not only concernes with the artist's creation and viewer's aesthetic interpretation ,but also takes full account of the historical context of the visual art.All in all, His research does a lot of contribution in expanding the understanding of our visual world.
