The fossilization in this paper is limited to vocabulary fossilization in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. It means false or inappropriate form in all levels and contexts of the language structure before learners master the target language model. Among the big,the middle and the small concepts of glosseme, the paper adopt the middle concept.. It is that glosseme is equivalent to semantic items, consisting of glosseme value and glosseme domain. The vocabulary fossilization in teaching Chinese as a foreign language exists in three aspects—teacher, learner and learning tools. Whether those phenomena are fossilizations of the individual glosseme or collocations of multiple glossemes, they are deviations from national traits of glosseme, which leads to even consolidates the vocabulary fossilization. In this sense, national traits of glosseme is one of the reasons of fossilization. The national traits of glosseme is only appropriately applied to vocabulary teaching when it is interpreted totally and exactly. The paper describes the theory from the following areas:glosseme value, glosseme domain, polymerization structure and combination structure, and every area consists of some specific parts, for example, polymerization structure contains hyponymy structure and polysemy structure. Among those areas, glosseme value and glosseme domain belong to the microstructure of glosseme, polymerization structure and combination structure belong to the macrostructure. The theory value lies in enhancing the repetition rate and the contrast between different languages, strengthening the analyticity of vocabulary acquisition and having some enlightenments to vocabulary acquisition in terms of teacher, learner and the compilation of textbooks and dictionaries, which contributes to reducing and preventing the fossilization.
