This thesis, through classification statistics, contrasts of the figure of speech in Chinese and British poetry and different figurative thoughts between the two nationalities, concludes that the figurative thoughts in British poetry possesses more creativity and pioneering than Chinese ones.From four aspects, the thesis contrasts figure of speech in Chinese and British poetry. First, contrast between classifications of things to which the main body and the metaphor point, shows that British poetry concern more about abstract notions; second, comparison collection between the metaphor and the similar point, clarifies the figure of speech in Chinese and British poetry. Third, contrast proportion of cognitive to rhetorical figure of speech, searches for the difference from thinking pattern angle; fourth, finds the distinction in thinking creativity through the concepts of "psychological distance" and "distance principle." Afterwards, in order to find the generality and particularity of the two countries'poets in theme comparison, the thesis exclusively studies the cases of "single-tenor & multi-vehicle" and "single-vehicle & multi-tenor", extracting the motifs of "beauty," "love," "self," and "moon" etc. to compare.Finally, the thesis proposes the reason for such difference, holding the view that the difference lies in the two nations'different natural environment, thinking patterns, social psychology.
