Pu Songling and E. T. A. Hoffmann are both fantasy writers. Despite of the spatial and temporal separation and cultural differences, the works of the two great artists' have some amazing coincident:when they handle with love story materials, their own psychological activities are reflected upon their heroes, and their ideologies of love are conveyed by their heroines.Because of their similar life experiences, they create many similar heroes and heroines. The dreamy happy end of their characters can be considered a way the authors defy the real world. Meanwhile, because of the social, economical, cultural, historic and other discrepancies, the subtle dissimilarities of their works are also worthy of a careful study. It is very objective that the western critics appreciate Hoffmann as one of the most important authors before Heine and after Goethe. Although Pu's works are a hundred years earlier than Hoffmann's and have some inevitable limitations, yet he is still as magnificent as the author of late Romanticism.
