With the rapid economy development in China, international communication increasingly becomes frequent and important. Therefore there are increasing needs for studying English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and developing specific purpose language ability. Legal English (also called"the English for law") is such a kind of ESP. In order to develop the legal English proficiency, legal English teaching and testing are necessary. Testing constitutes as a crucially important part of teaching. Nowadays, many universities or colleges have set up a plan for legal English teaching. However, the research concerning legal English testing lacks concern from the scholars and experts, generally speaking, legal English testing lacks scientific guidance.As there are many different kinds of testing, I just choose the legal English proficiency tests to study. Proficiency test is set to evaluate testers'general ability in this area, so it may guide other kinds of tests, such as achievement test. National Legal English Certificate Test is the first try in China. The research on this test (LEC) is meaningful both in theory and practice.In the first chapter, the author introduces the rationale of the research, research questions, literature review and theoretical foundation. The second chapter indicates methodology used in the thesis, including case study and comparative analysis. In the third part, the main body analyzed the Legal English Certificate (LEC) test and evaluated the test according to usefulness test design principle. The forth chapter, which is also the main body part, compared the LEC test with the other two international legal English tests. The last chapter concludes the advantages and disadvantages of LEC test. Finally, the pedagogical significance of the study is discussed and its limitations are mentioned.
