For the four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) of English language, the cultivation of the communicative ability is indispensable. And how to enhance students' English communicative ability has been the popular topic among some researchers and English teachers for a long time.In order to inquire the ways to improve students'English communicative ability from different perspectives, many teachers carried out a lot of related researches to get some achievements. At the same time, how to make English tests more scientific has been one of the focuses of researchers in recent years.Based on the review of related concepts and the development of language testing, it is found that communicative test is the tendency in the field of language testing. A few communicative tasks were designed according to the communicative testing theory. To evaluate appropriately the communicative ability of candidates, a new set of analytical rating scale wad put forward by fully considering the theory of Bachman's communicative competence.In order to testify whether the communicative test could be more beneficial to candidates and what are advantages and disadvantages form paperless test and traditional test, an experiment which lasted for two semesters among 4,000 students was conducted, who take part in paperless test and traditional test respectively. The data collected from the experiment demonstrate that the subjects in the group A score much higher in the communicative tasks than those in the group B in the traditional tasks. Furthermore, scores obtained by the subjects in the group A in post-experiment test are higher than those they got in in-experiment test. The results of the interviews and a questionnaire also show the attitudes and suggestions from the subjects towards the communicative test and two different test models so that we get the objective comparison of two test models.The thesis is to explain the important guidance for English test and the feedback for English teaching from the communicative theory and to improve the English communicative ability of students.
