With the rapid growth of world trade, international shipping industry has developed prosperously. Accordingly, the better understanding of maritime English plays an essential role in communication among various international shipping activities. However, compared with other sub-varieties of maritime English, English marine accident reports (MAR) have not received due attention. There has been no works so far making a systematic and comprehensive analysis of its language features in linguistic field. This thesis is an attempt to study and analyze the language features of English marine accident reports systematically and comprehensively based on the theory of modern stylistics.10 samples of MAR are collected from the official website of National Transportation Safety Board in the USA and a corpus EMARC of 233,306 words is established. The other two corpora LOBA and BROWNA which are representatives of general English are employed to help reveal the similar and distinctive language features of MAR on levels of graphology, lexis and grammar with the methods of quantitative and qualitative analysis. From the research, some significant features of MAR have been found:MAR uses many visual aids, fewer punctuation marks and longer paragraphs; the words are formal, precise and authoritative which are much longer than those of general English; numerals and specialized terms are widely used in MAR. This thesis is hoped to shed some light on the understanding and teaching of writing MAR.
