Based on typological theories,taking participle modifiers as examples,this report aims to first translate the selected Marine Accident Investigation reports,and then analyze and summarize the translation principles and strategies of modifying constituents used as attributives,adverbials,and complements.The typological and translation theories involved in this study are:The Skopos Theory,The Principle of Temporal Sequence,Identifiability Precedence,Semantic Closeness,Highlighting Predicate Verb,The Wholeness of Nominal Clause,etc.The translation principles and strategies put forward by this report are:1L The translation of participle attributives:(1)Preposed attributives are to be translated as preposed ones;(2)Postposed attributives are to be translated as either preposed ones or independent sentences,based on the complexity and length of them;2.The translation of participle adverbials:(1)Preposed adverbials are to be translated as preposed ones;(2)Adverbials between the subject and the verb are to be translated either as preposed or "middleposed" ones,based on the actual context;(3)Postposed adverbials are to be translated as either postposed ones or"middleposed" ones,based on their complexity,length,and the actual context;3.The translation of participle complements:(1)The ones with simple constructions are to be translated as Chinese resultatives;(2)The ones with complex and long constructions are to be translated as independent sentences.The writer hopes to come up with some translation strategies and methods with credibility,which could be of certain benefit to people concerned.
