The paper applies directional and quantitative analysis of sociolinguistics to the study of the change and development of the lexicon of netspeak within the last decade. Through the analysis of corpus, several tendencies have been presented:the origins of netspeak lexicon have been diversified, words that were popular in the early years have been less used, new words have been more localized and are forming more word families, and last but not least, the usage of netspeak has been extended to everyday life. Also, the paper discusses the internal and external reasons for the change in netspeak, reaching a conclusion that the development of netspeak complies with the rules of all human languages and especially those of the Chinese language and that it is closely related to network technology, the composition of netspeak users and the attitude the whole society holds towards it.Finally, it is revealed that netspeak has its own self-regulating mechanism. The prognosis is for new tendencies of change to occur with the development of technology and society, hence due attention should be paid to the preservation of netspeak corpus.
