With the rapid development of IT (Information Technology) and the Net, many Western and Chinese linguists have taken up the study of Netspeak. But they conduct researches in onefold aspect and fail to analyze this new linguistic phenomenon in an all-around and systematic way. In an attempt to study this phenomenon in lexical, phonetic, syntactic and pragmatic aspects, this thesis discusses the characteristics of Netspeak in English and Chinese. The thesis consists of five chapters besides Introduction and Conclusion.Introduction briefly introduces the necessity and significance of the researches that result in this thesis.Chapter One discusses the notion of the Net, which naturally leads to the introduction of the term Netspeak because they come hand in hand. After their definitions are given, the thesis demarcates the range of study.Chapter Two probes into the formation of and the motivation for English and Chinese Networds from a lexical perspective.Chapter Three presents studies on the phonetic features of the Netspeak: the special usages and the "dialectical" features in Netspeak.Chapter Four focuses on the syntactic features of the Netspeak. After the phenomena are discussed, this thesis theorizes on the causes of them.Chapter Five is devoted to the co-operation principies in Netspeak. Emoticons, an accompanying feature, is discussed in the aspect of Net communication. Conclusion sums up the previous chapters and points out that as a new linguistic phenomenon in its early stage, the Netspeak will make a most rewarding and absorbing study.
