Calvin Wilson Mateer was the missionary of American Presbyterian. He was long been recoganised as an educator. The Teng Chow School which was operated by him was one of the earliest Christian colleges. Mateer wrote quite a lot of textbooks about the western sciences, which attract the attention of many scholars. His works relating to Chinese teaching, however, was barely discussed. The textbook< A Course of Mandarin Lessons: Based on Idiom> studied by this article had a deep influence among the missionaries. The article is going to analysize the structure, content and its feature of being a spoken textbook.The first chapter discusses Calvin Wison Mateer's life to find the reasons and results for his teaching activities in China, especially his Chinese teaching activities. The second chapter researches the structure, content and two relating textbooks. The textbook has a good control of the quantity of new words.The latter part of the book is consistutes of more complicated sentences and short paragraphs to convey profound meanings. Considering the content, every lesson in the textbook consists of single sentence in so as to make more exercises on particular grammars. The author listed different pronunciations respectively from north and south China. The author wrote two relating textbooks after receiving the feedback from users. The analysis of its feature of being an oral textbook in the third chapter is the major part of the article, which can be divided into three categories:vocabulary, sound and cultural notes. The textbook reflects features of the mandarin vocabulary in north China, and lists 5 different sound tables in five major cities in China.The last chapter shows the advantages and disadvantages of the textbook, and makes comparisons with two modern textbooks in order to find out how the discussed texkbook can make contributions to the writing of modern Chinese teaching materials, and to the writers as well.
