“A course of Mandarin Lessons based on idiom” is a Chinese textbook written byAmerican missionaries C.W. Mateer, which is used to teach missionaries the prevailinglanguage at that time, Mandarin. Although originates from the ancient Chinese, yu huiactives lively in the Proto-Mandarin Chinese, especially in the spoken Chinese.“Acourse of Mandarin Lessons based on idiom” was published in the late20th century, inwhich period the Chinese is in the transitional stage of Proto-Mandarin Chinese tomodern Chinese. This book records a large number of valuable material about yu hui.This paper mainly discusses idioms, twisters, proverbs and idiomatic expressions ofthe “A course of Mandarin Lessons based on idiom” from the point of languageclassification and structural type. Besides, this paper compares yu hui of “A course ofMandarin Lessons based on idiom” with modern dictionaries and tries to explain themeaning of yu hui that can’t be found in those modern dictionaries.The paper is divided into six chapters: The first chapter introduces the content,version, research value and current research of “A course of Mandarin Lessons basedon idiom”. Besides, the first chapter introduces the research content and methods of thispaper.The second chapter describes structural types of the idiom of “A course of MandarinLessons based on idiom”. And also discusses those synonymous structures made offour-character from the book. Besides, this chapter analyzes the source of partial idiom.The third chapter describes structural types of twisters of “A course of MandarinLessons based on idiom” and discusses those twisters which are not recorded in thoserepresentative dictionaries. Owing to different cultural backgrounds and customs, some oftranslations are not appropriate. The author analyzes reasons from the point of view of thecross-cultural and put up with more reasonable translation program in the final.The fourth chapter describes structural types of proverbs of “A course of MandarinLessons based on idiom” and analyzes the meaning of those proverbs which are notrecorded in representative dictionaries. And this chapter explores the source of theproverb of “A course of Mandarin Lessons based on idiom”.The fifth chapter describes structural types of idiomatic expressions of “A course ofMandarin Lessons based on idiom”,"and analyzes the meaning of those idiomaticexpressions which are not recorded in those representative dictionaries. Owing to differentcultural backgrounds and customs, some of translations are not appropriate. The author analyzes reasons from the point of view of the cross-cultural and put up with morereasonable translation program in the final.The sixth chapter studies the yu hui of “A course of Mandarin Lessons based onidiom” from the view of teaching Chinese as a foreign language and analyzes reasonswhy Mateer chose yu hui as the teaching material. What’s more, the author comparesthe teaching of yu hui with modern teaching of yu hui.
