To improve the layout effect of characters in contemporary books, this paper re-examines the current character's typography and explores the advantages of the visual features starting with the block-printed font in Qing Dynasty to adjust the printing font of the current books. It analyzes the stroke and structure of the block-printed font in Qing Dynasty based on the use of geometric figures and gets the result that the block-printed font in Qing Dynasty had showed the visual characteristics of the current typographic font. It not only inherited the characteristics of engraving fonts, but also developed the standardized stroke and structure suitable for printing and reading. By a comparative study of the block-printed font in Qing Dynasty and the current printing font, it gets that the development of the current printing font has reduced gray contrast of font, resulting in a single-level gray of printing layout; the improvement of center of gravity results in the ethereal visual experience of the current printing font, which affects the layout effects; new production technology makes the literal shape of the block-printed font in Qing Dynasty sharp, square and upright with clear machinery signs of stroke, reducing the affinity of the current printing font. And these problems can all be solved in font analysis, such as adjusting the layout of stroke, tightening end words relations, etc. By these conclusions, we can do design experiments on the contemporary printing font and its layout and try to improve the font in the present books and its layout effect.
