Wei-Jin Northern and Southern Dynasty in Chinese history was a special period. It lasted about four hundred years, with wars frequently and Dynasty supersession. The society was in turmoil:and the people lived with miserable conditions in an unprecedented darkness. However this is an era of artistic consciousness and the art of painting in this period had gained a brilliant achievement. There appeared a lot of theorists such as ZongBing, GuKaizhi, Wangwei, XieHao. YaoZui and so on. which had a far-reaching effect on later generations.This paper discusses the various achievements of the theory of painting during Wei-Jin Northern and Southern Dynasty, and analyzes the theoretical connotations, grasps the basic category and core concept. The paper is divided into seven chapters.In the first chapter, it analyzes the reasons of development of the painting from the social economic, historical and cultural background during the dynasties. And the impacts on the theory of painting made by characters. Talk metaphysics, literary theory and Buddhist statuary in this period.In the second chapter, according to read the three existing articles "Painting Theories", "Wei Jin Sheng Liu Hua Zan" and "The Record of Painting YunTai Mountain ", it analyzes the connotation of the theory of "soul communication".In the third chapter. "Hua Shan Shui Xu" by ZongBing and "Xu Hua" by WangWei had been the significant theory of landscape painting during Wei-Jin-South-North period. The theory "in shape to write form, with color looks color" put forward by ZongBing, and "the body" and "is the" gods drop by WangWei made GuKaizhi's theory of "soul communication" apply to the field of landscape painting and emphasized the Natural aesthetic that the key of landscape painting is to paint the soul. It made an important influence on aesthetical standard of landscape painting in China.In the fourth chapter, the first comment work of China is "the Records of Ancient Paintings" by XieHao in which he put forward the thesis of "six laws" as the art standard. YaoZui proposed "making all in one's mind" and "nature theory" in his "Xu hua lu" which is another significant work after XieHao's.In the fifth Chapter. "Shan Shui Song Shi Ge" was considered to write by Liang Yuandi-XiaoYi. which a lot of later scholars raised objections to it. This chapter will make aIn the sixth chapter, it will give a comprehensive statement on the theory of painting from several theorists like XuGan. Caozhi. Luji. Wangyi. Yanzhitui. Sunchangzhi. because they had fewer theories and made a limited effect.In seventh Chapter, it makes a summary about the significant status of painting theory during Wei-Jin Northern and Southern Dynasty in Aesthetics History of China. The theory of "soul communication", of landscape painting and of "six methods" made a far-reaching influence on the formation and development of Chinese appreciation of the beauty.Based on the books about painting theory during Wei-Jin-South-North period, and a combination of the drawings in the period, it get a further reading on Aesthetic implication and tendency in the dynasties, and offers some references and inspirations to research on history of the theory of painting.
