The successful propagation of Pop music calls for four elements connecting effectively: songs, the singer, market and audiences. The information dissemination of Pop songs is one way from singers to listeners on the surface. But the singers can not ignore the feedback of information from the listeners, because Pop Music has the commercial "pop" nature. However, Pop Music can reflect the value orientation of the mass culture, to a certain degree. The songs not only involve both of the singers'value and the listeners'value, but also represent the double investigation of the government and the mass media under the social environment. The meaning of Pop Music generated from various viewpoints, represents more widespread and common aesthetic values. As a kind of subculture, Mandarin pop songs can be used as an effective approach of mass culture research.This dissertation strives to discuss the relation between the lyrics and the mass culture in Chinese mainland, by analyzing the text of the lyrics, combining object and experience of author, and get the conclusion that how the mass culture build the value on the text of the lyrics. The dissertation is divided to five main parts. The first chapter covers the related background and meaning of this topic, the literature review, theoretical foundation, documentary narrative and method. The second chapter discusses the generation type of the meaning of lyrics. The third chapter uses the text analyzing method to analyze the meaning of mandarin pop songs presented in the lyrics. The forth chapter discusses the relationship'calling'between the lyrics and the mass culture, taking 30 years of reform and opening-up as reference point. Finally, the dissertation reveals the urgency problems in the development of Chinese pop songs.
