An Example Od Writer Working With Mass Culture

From the late 1980抯 to the 1990抯, mass culture develops prosperously in China and inevitably the existing culture system has been affected by it. Various kinds of narratives and criticisms of different valuations conflict and coexist. As many criticisms we can refer to, criticists always admit the impact of the commerce to the literary creation and at the same time they pass judgments on the new direction according to the traditional literary opinions, consequently the misunderstanding of some narratives exists. This article aims at the exploration of the writer Chili whose literary life serves as a sample in nowadays China. Trying to straighten out the elementary characteristics of the mass culture in China, this article sets the writer in the position of a typical example who joins the trend of mass culture and re-evaluates the value and significance of this phenomenon. This article expounds the thesis in three aspects. To begin with, the distinction between three pairs of relative concepts, to make it more explicit, mass culture vs. popular culture, commercial value vs. cultural value and mass literature vs. classical literature; it tries to explain the reason of choosing mass culture as the topic and offer an explicit cultural background and theoretical supports. Secondly. with the deep dissects to the mass interest in Chili抯 fictions, the article inspects the detailed manifestations of her devotion to mass literature. As subjects are concerned, she chooses the normal citizens as her heroes; as stories are concerned, she sticks to the natural writing style as well as the pursuit of the rise and fall of plots. Chili takes the mass interest as the content of her literary creation and exploits a new tension space. Thirdly, connected with the development of the mass culture in China, the article tries to explore the hidden mass characteristics and cultural meanings of the operating style of Chili抯 works. Namely, the gradual emergence of the importance of regarding readers as consumers, the mutual competition and dependence of different respects of mass media in iii the process of making Chili a popular writer, and the special literary phenomenon emerged in the operation of Lipstick--- -the writer has become a genuine aspect in mass culture with the help of mass media. Chili is a successful example of the intellectuals who adapt their opinions and face the culture market in a more candid manner, which reflects the rise and fall of the artistic creation confronted with the challenge and permeation of mass culture. Chili consciously or unconsciously becomes an important producer of mass literature with expressions of mass interest and operations when entering into the culture market and at the same time many differences between mass literature and classical literature emerge step by step. Because of the tortuous development of mass culture in China and the speciality of the cultural commodity, the writing experience and consciousness of writers develops in different levels; thus mass literature in China is still immature.
