This thesis is intended to probe into the key link of modern poetry education:"close reading". One such self-sufficient theory has been constructed by every aspect from the background, function, path and poetry educators’ required literacy.The article is mainly divided into two parts. The first part is laying out the background. It is introduced by the discussion about nearly more than10years’domestic poetry education and the influence which the theory of close reading in western new criticism makes on Chinese poetry teaching, to highlight the theoretical background and practical relevance of this research.The second part is the main body of the thesis. It is divided into three topics. The first argument is the necessity of close reading in modern poetry education. Close reading is the right attitude that the reader must have to the text. It is a requirement that the artistry of words is given full play. It is the responsibility of poetry educators and the aesthetic expectation of listeners. It is also the touchstone of testing the text quality and a base of readers’ reproductive imagination to soar. The second topic is discussed how the text should be read. First of all, we have to read it word by word in detail without any omission. This is the level of analysis in close reading. It is based on a large number of instances to demonstrate the serious consequences if we read carelessly. Secondly, poetic taste is a must to read the poem. This is the aesthetic level. Poetic taste can be generally divided into seven kinds:the beauty of philosophy、emotion、image、artistic conception、technique、poetic flavor、style and the fusion of tastes. Finally, it is pointed out that close reading ultimately results in expansion and sublimation. This is the value orientation and the inevitable achievement of close reading. Because it pours the vitality of "walk" and "fly" into to the text (words) and fills gaps of art in text. It makes the texts become never-withering flowers. At the end of this part it is figured out that "creative deviation " in close reading is the freedom and rights of readers. It should be protected and respected. The third topic is talked about the poetry educators’basic literacy for close reading of texts. It includes four aspects:life experience, theoretical accomplishment, poetry knowledge, writing practice. The level of reading and poetry education can be higher if the aspects of literacy are improved.In this thesis, there are not only a wide range of scanning, but also deep dig.The thesis has absorbed the essence of ancient and modern, Chinese and foreign relevant theory as far as possible. It is integrated of various methods, such as literature review, case analysis, inductive comparison, etc. I strive to have new arguments, through reasoning, detailed materials, accurate expression, so the value tendency shows more apparently. There are not only enough theory altitude and academic nature as theoretical research, but also practical significance and operability as applied research.
