Comparative Study Of Khitan Small Script The Epitaph Deputy Administrator Yelu And Khitan Large Script The Epitaph Of Yelu Qi

Khitan large script and Khitan small script are two kinds of scripts which created by Khitan in the early part of the 10th century in order to record Khitan language. Chinese script, Khitan small script and Khitan large script are regarded as official script in Liao Dynasty for two hundred years. Jin Dynasty had been used the two Khitan scripts for several decades after Liao Dynasty extinct. There are about fifty pieces materials discovered heretofore, and most of them are grief volumes of emperors or epitaph of royal families and officials. Still being a not completely understanding script at the moment, Khitan script is known as "secret of 20th century". In academia, people generally consider that Khitan small script is alphabetic script and Khitan large script is a script of ideograph. However, the recent study shows that numerous alphabetical elements exist in Khitan large script.The thesis is based on the achievements of senior scholars, and compares The Epitaph Deputy Administrator YelÇ–in Khitan Small Script with The Epitaph of Yelu Qi in Khitan Large Script, then carefully analyses several problems existing in them. First of all, the author accomplishes the electronic copy of the two epitaphs according to clear rubbings. Secondly, the author went to the museum where the two epitaphs in collection, and check up the electronic copy with original stones, then completed to write the record of proof. At the last place, mainly using the method of comparative study of the Khitan large script and Khitan small script, the author emphasizes and probes into the characters denoting large and small in Khitan large script and Khitan small script, the names of the both Khitan large script and Khitan small script, the possessive case in Khitan language and a category of nominal gender, the principle of vowel attachment and spelling feature of Khitan large script and Khitan small script etc. moreover, put forwards own viewpoints on pronunciations and meanings of several Khitan large scripts.The result of the thesis improves the level to decipher the two epitaphs above mentioned and understanding the character of Khitan large script and Khitan small script. It is also valuable to refer for comparative study of Khitan and the Mongolic languages.
