Reading is visual perception language signal the brain handling, processing and understanding information on the meaning of the mental process. The goal of College English teaching puts forward higher demand to students' reading comprehension. There is no doubt that to improve reading comprehension is necessary for every student. Thus some new methods should be used to improve reading comprehension. The Internet has emerged as a prominent new technology and developed rapidly. It provides abundant and convenient resources. The use of the Internet is widespread in numerous fields and domains. It carries great information and resources available at hand and presents a new way of learning English reading based on the new technology. The National Ministry of Education issued College English Course Teaching Requirements (referred to Requirements in the following) in 2004. The Requirements requires colleges and universities to "remold the existing unitary teacher-centered pattern of language teaching by introducing new teaching models with the help of multimedia and network technology so that English language teaching will be free from time and space limit." Nowadays, English autonomous learning under Web-based environment has been a key target for College English Teaching Reform, for students can learn and communicate on the Teaching Platform after searching for useful information on the Internet, using English freely and flexibly under an invented environment, finally reaching the goal of constructing autonomous learning ability and improving learning efficiency. This thesis introduces a new model of improving students'autonomous learning ability in reading study under Web-based environment after reviewing the related theoretical basis.61 second-year College Students are involved in an 19-week period experiment during which they need to finish the Pre-test and the Pre-questionnaire, the Post-test and the Post-questionnaire and an interview. The scores from the tests and questionnaires are analyzed for quantitative study by a computer software of the Statistical Package for Social Science. the data analyses demonstrate the effectiveness of the experiment on learner autonomy in Web-based EFL reading in the experimental class. In summary, the independent variable, learner autonomy in web-based EFL reading is highly and positively correlated with the dependent variable, EFL reading ability. The experiment proves the effectiveness and feasibility of this introduced model.
