Since China joined the WTO, China economy has a rapid growth and higher vocational technology education has also developed quickly. The higher vocational technology education is to cultivate talents of applied competence with better theory knowledge and good hand working ability. Therefore, higher vocational technical colleges (Hereinafter referred to as HVTC) English, as a basic subject, should emphasize the utility and practicality of English teaching. However, the higher vocational English teaching has been taking the same English teaching mode with common higher universities from the textbooks selection, teaching process, to teaching methodology and does not have its own teaching features.Based on Hutchinson & Waters'needs analysis theory, the investigation questionnaire and interview were designed to learn the present English teaching problems existing at HVTC. The research subjects are the students from three high vocational technology colleges in Shijiazhuang, Hebei province. The investigation questionnaire includes the students'learning needs, students'evaluation on English textbooks and teaching mode etc. Meanwhile, the interview with the graduates has made a complement to the investigation results. According to the investigation results, the author puts forward that English teachers should transfer their traditional teaching concept, probe into the English teaching reform in accordance with the students'learning needs and market needs and take different teaching content and improve teaching methodology based on different market needs and different cultivation goals of HVTC for the students of different majors.This thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter One introduces the research background and the characteristics of HVTC English teaching; Chapter Two explains the different understandings of needs and classifications of needs analysis theory; Chapter Three investigates the present English teaching problems by means of the investigation questionnaire and interview; Chapter Four analyzes and summarizes the problems and finds out the causes; Chapter Five demonstrates us the countermeasures on HVTC English teaching reform based on needs analysis theory and finally, Chapter Six draws the conclusion.The creative point of this thesis lies in the application of needs analysis theory into HVTC English teaching reform. Although there are some limitations needing to be improved in this thesis, it is hoped that the thesis will be helpful to HVTC English teaching research in the future.
