When Author And Translator Collide

The translator's subjectivity in self-translation, due to its much more complicated nature than other-translations (because of its translator-cum-author feature), is rarely touched. Therefore, based on a detailed comparative case study of Eileen Chang's self-translation of The Rouge of the North, this thesis is trying to explore how the author-cum-translators manifest themselves during the process of self-translation Hopefully, this case study, to some extent, can make some contribution to the later translator's subjectivity study in self-translation.Eileen Chang, as one of the most important writers in 20th century China, is capable of bilingual writing. She also is one of a few writers who insist on translating herself. Her self-translations involve essays, short stories and novellas. Chang's rich self-translation experience, her longtime overseas residence plus her special back-translation The Rouge of the North (written in English and then translated into Chinese) make her a typical and tillable case in translator's subjectivity of self translation study.This thesis is conducted under a descriptive approach which will lead to a theoretical summary or construction. On the micro level, close text reading and analyses are to be employed. In addition, this thesis utilizes the achievements of self-translation study and general translation study theories. The thesis concludes that compared with their other-translation peers, self-translators always have a more thorough understanding of his or her own works. Since they hold authorship privilege and have the advantage in interpreting themselves, they can boldly"fix"the original. Therefore, the realization process of translator's subjectivity in self-translation is actually a self-amendment process through inter-transformation among language self, poetic self and cross-cultural self.
