Mainly based on the Shenbao Newspaper, the author's make a positivistic study on the crime's timing and spatial distribution of the metropolis of Shanghai within the 1870s, with a historical geography perspective. In this study, the author also has reshaped the crime distribution maps by turning the crime records reported on the "Shenbao Newspaper" and statistics of the annual reports of French and Municipal Council into crime database and crime physical points. Consequently it is proved statistically and visually that the crime distribution and the prosperous areas, in Shanghai of that time, have a high positive correlation. While, the distribution characteristics shown on the maps are directly affected by some social changes, such as the mass migration, urban construction, and institutional improvements especially of the concessions.
