Language is the carrier of culture and records it in a faithful way. Besides, language itself is a kind of cultural phenomenon. Any language embodies its nation's rich and distinctive cultural connotations. Conversely, culture is the basis of language development. Different nations'cultural connotations results into various language structure and rules, which restrict language conveying and understanding in cross-cultural communication. Learning a language is meanwhile learning its culture.The close relationship between language and culture decides that any language teaching cannot be separated from culture teaching. One of the major characteristics of the subject of Teaching Chinese as A Second Language is cross-cultural teaching, whose potential students are those foreign students with varying cultural backgrounds learning Chinese as non-native language. Teachers should give fully consideration of the cultural difference between students' native language and Chinese and the reason that caused the difference.With the acceleration of globalization, cultural exchange and cooperation between countries and nations all over the world has become increasingly often. More and more foreign students come to China to learn Chinese for reasons. However, different cultural backgrounds have exerted huge influence upon their Chinese learning. Many pragmatic failures rooted in language have been caused. Through questionnaires, this thesis has gathered and analyzed the pragmatic failures concerning color words, time words, complement words, tattoos, and invitation words. The author mainly discussed the reasons that cause these failures in cross-cultural communication. To name them as follows:first, the tremendous difference between values in east and west directly influenced the existing cognition of both sides; Second, the thinking model is partly responsible for the effective communication; Third, habits of traditional custom are important factors for the failures; Fourth, the negative effect from one's mother language culture can also be one of the causes of social communication failure; Fifth, pragmatic rules can cause social pragmatic failure.Based on the previous research, we propose the teaching advices as follow:strengthen the introduction of culture in TCFL; improve the ability of teachers. Improving the cross-cultural communication abilities of students and avoiding pragmatic failures in communication through the bridge.
