The preview effect is a phenomenon that, in a preview search task, when one set of distractors (the old items) appeared for some seconds before the other (the new items) items, the search was more efficient in the preview condition than conjunction search. There were three main theories explaining the preview effect, they are:The inhibition account, it posits that an active machanism keeps the locations of the old items inhibited; The temporal asynchrony emphasizes that visual marking is based on temporal asychrony between new and old items, allowing segregation of these items into two temporal groups, with attention selectively applied to one group; The automatic onset capture, proposed by Donk and Theeuwes, posits that prioritization of new items because their presentation induces abrupt onset, which is know to capture visual attention. The explanation mechanism of preview effect has been a focal point in the field of preview search. The present study investigated how the Linerly change of the location of the old items affect preview effect by using the capital letters of the Latin alphabet. Our research has three experiments, In experiment 1, we used the material of classical preview search, investigated the change of the location of the old items how to affect preview effect in different conditions. In experimet 2, removed the color difference between the old items and the new items, discussed the role of color in the preview search. In experiment 3, We changed the pattern of the apperance of the stimuli in the classical preview search task, to investigate the role of location and color in the preview search. Our evidence and conclusions can be summarized as follows:(1) The linerly change of the location of the old itemes has no effect on preview effect;(2) After removed the color difference of the old and new items, we found that there was no preview effect when target involved in the location change; (3) When old and new items were all color mixing materials, and target shared the same color with them, the preview effet was totally distoryed;(4) The information of location and color plays a important role in the preview effect.we discuss the results in terms of separate effects of (1) inhibitory of the locations of old item, and (2) inhibitory carryover from the preview color group, and (3) an anticipatory set for the known target color.
