The "Gentleman" Thought Researching From The Analects Of Confucius Of American Scholars

This thesis works on the studies on "Gentleman" in《The Analects of Confucius》of four American Sinologists, who are Creel, Roger Ames, William Theodore de Bary, and William Theodore de Bary, discovering the different perspectives between Chinese and western scholars, and finding out what we can learn from western scholars.This thesis starts the study from the traditional contents and domestic confusion of "Gentleman". The first part of Chapter one makes a full introduction of the history and background of American Confucianism, including the main schools and their main viewpoints. The second part summarizes the viewpoints on "Gentleman" in《The Analects of Confucius》of four American Sinologists mentioned above. Chapter two does a research on the viewpoints of the four American Sinologists from three aspects. By working out the similarity and individuality in their studies, the thesis summarizes the misunderstanding or new trails, which can be used as references for domestic researches. Chapter three discusses in-depth on the viewpoints that can be learned as references for domestic researches. The author concludes that domestic studies on "Gentleman" is a stereotype in a sort of sense, incapable of discovering that "Gentleman" has gone beyond times and nations, which is the purpose of the thesis, with the truth that American Sinologist speak highly of "Gentlemen". The conclusion part sums up the main viewpoints and rethink the modern sense of "Gentlemen" and studies on it.By analyzing the studies of the four Sinologist, author works out the innovation and shortages of their studies. By working out the innovation and shortages of their studies, author summarizes what can learn from their studies and the new sense of "Gentleman".
