Hou Wai-lu (1903-1987), born in Pingyao of Shanxi Province, was a distinguished Marxist historian in the modern China. He is one of the five Marxist historians in the 20th century Marxism camp, who studies the academic history of Qing Dynasty thought Historical Materialism. His Contribution to the field of the history of Chinese Thought is particularly prominent.5-volume History of Chinese Thought is the most representative one, both in the History of Thought and the entire field of scholarly research. I have no ability to do a well-rounded examination to all his thought, only take Volume 5 for example, excepting to get a better understanding.This paper is made up of four chapters. The first chapter describes the significance of the theme and draws the outline of Hou Wailu's biography, by reviewing his learning and life. Chapter two is the re-evaluation on the Hou Wai-lu's academic history of the early Qing Dynasty (in the case of Wang Chuan-shan),and compared the differences between the version of the 1945 and 1956. Chapter three discuss and analyze the academic history of the Mid-Qing Dynasty (in the case of Dai-zhen), focusing on textual or not, and also contains comparative. The last Chapter describes his study about the academic history of the Late Qing Dynasty,in the case of Kang You-wei and his writings.
