Liang Qichao was a famous scholar who broadly influenced Chinesemodern history. His cultural and academic study, whether establishinghistoriography or investigating Qing dynasty academic history, was bothdeployed around 'history'—"although his study varied much, yeteverything was connected to history". Liang was one of the founders ofNew Historiography of Chinese modern history. The new historiographytheoretical system established by him played a very important role inestablishing Chinese modern historiography; his historiographical theoryand methodology had a deep impact on his research of Chinese historyand at the same time influenced a lot of modern historiographists. Amongthe existing research of Qing dynasty academic history, Liang'sachievements have emblematic meanings. Academic history is part ofhistoriography. Liang being one of the founders of new historiography, his method of writing academic history would be different from themethod of that before his time. This study investigated the relationshipbetween the two based on previous research and taken into considerationof the concept of Liang's historiography theory and his works of Qingdynasty academic history. The main issue discussed in this study is howLiang studied Qing dynasty academic history using the historiographytheory established by himself. This thesis is divided into four parts:Part one describes the big era atmosphere and Liang's own academic background at the time when Liang formed his thoughts on historiography based on the origins of Liang's and late Qing's academy.Part two describes Liang's historiography thoughts and methods in his early time and the impact of it on his research of Qing dynasty academic history in the great trends of changes in Chinese academic thoughts.Part three, which is the main part of the study, discusses the relationship between Liang's historiography thoughts and his research on Qing's academic history in his later time (especially the research shown in his two classical works on Qing's academic history Introduction of Qing's academic history and Chinese Academic History in the past three hundred years.Part four makes a comparison between Liang's and other scholars' research on Qing's academic history, which could reveal the essential characteristics of Liang's study in this area.
