| Central Daily News, the mouthpiece of the KMT, editorial is the soul of newspapers, through which the changes of the thought & policy of the KMT can be penetrated. Research on the Central Daily News of 1949 in this article is to make an analysis on the response and reflection of KMT in the critical situation.1949 is a key year in Chinese history, a watershed, in which, the power of the KMT turned from strong to weak, and ultimately withdrawing to Taiwan while the Chinese Communists from weak to strong, established regime on the mainland. In critical situation, the KMT first sought peace from the Communists to be as stalling tactics, but the uncompromising attitude of the Communists put the KMT into a quite helpless situation, from the expectations "peace" to the "war" of despair. Being defeated in the battle of the mainland, the KMT learnt a lesson from this bitter experience and carried out reflection and review on the society, economy, military, politics, thinking and other aspects etc. and resolved to regain their declining tendency. Although the KMT asked for reformation in Chinese mainland, the situation didn't give them the opportunity, thus it could only be achieved in Taiwan.In order to set a firm foothold in Taiwan, the KMT introduced sweeping reform measures:land reform, implementation of the "37.5 Percent Farm Rental Reduction Act", alleviating social contradictions; implementing currency reform, rebuilding the economy system, stabilizing economic order; attacking against despots and hiring new people and adopting new policies to prevent corruption and improve administrative efficiency. Meanwhile, the KMT also fortified Taiwan, not only establishing military facilities and lifting martial law in Taiwan as well as seeking allies, but also implementing the "National Language Movement" and the cultural reconstruction. The KMT in Taiwan not only for its innovation and fortified base in Taiwan, has provided a guarantee, but also the development of Taiwan since the foundation.
