Research On Chinese Cultural Diplomacy Towards ASEAN

The cultural relation is an important part of international relations. Culture has showed its irreplaceable role in the international relations after the end of cold-war, and nowadays more and more countries pay much more attention to their cultural relations to the others. Cultural diplomacy, as now the important component of one's diplomacy, has became "the fourth polar" after political diplomacy, military diplomacy and economical diplomacy. Since the new century, cultural diplomacy has been taken highly and more and more external cultural cooperation are carried out.After the comparative low ebb, the 90s of last century saw the new development between China and ASEAN and it grows rapidly during the past ten years. During this period, their cooperation focused on regional security and economical cooperation, cultural cooperation was in its infancy. Something can not be neglected is that there are many advantages for both to carry out cultural exchange.China's cultural diplomacy toward ASEAN is of great importance to China. It helps China to shape the good public image, to enhance the nation's overall strength, to build up the presence in this area and to improve their cooperation in each field. The essay aims to find out the insufficiency and obstacle in China's cultural diplomacy toward ASEAN by the analysis of Confucius Institute in south-east Asia, Chinese newspaper in ASEAN countries, media cooperation, education cooperation.The essay points out that China should do much more to make it better. China should take the building of CAFTA as an momentum and broaden their cultural exchange, develop practical cultural diplomacy strategy toward ASEAN, promote the contribution rate of culture industry to cultural diplomacy, and finally do more theory research on China-ASEAN cultural exchange.ASEAN has the strategic importance to China's development. Although the relationship has been improved after the cold-war, we should see deficiency, especially the gap to that of the USA and Japan. In China, the research on China's cultural diplomacy towards ASEAN is still not enough, the author hopes to try and get something useful for it.
